CARPENTER ANTS AND ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS Spring has arrived in Northwestern PA!!! The daily temperatures are now moving in an upward trend giving us a renewed joy of resuming our seasonal outdoor activities and enjoying they beautiful sounds and colors of spring exploding around us. But Wait!! What is that crawling along my counter tops! This time of year, we begin receiving a lot of calls concerning unwanted ant activity. The most common of these invaders are: Carpenter Ants, which are best described as a large black ant and can vary in size. The reproductive ants from the colony will have wings (commonly mistaken for termites). These ants are drawn to moisture sources in or around your home, such as water leaks, poor drainage and damp conditions. Carpenter ants if left untreated can cause structural damage to a home. Odorous House Ants are the smaller ants black and brownish in color. They are attracted to pet foods, sugary food sources and sticky forgotten spills. They enter your home most commonly through basements, foundations, and door sills. Treatments for these types of ants will vary with each unique situation. Over the counter sprays and bait traps are very ineffective. The treatment must lead to the colony of ants being destroyed. Effective methods are baits and liquid treatments.
